THE
SUICIDE
WIDOWS
PROJECT

Credibility through specificity

Summer 2026

The Suicide Widows Project is a three-year research initiative for people who have lost a spouse or partner to suicide. It launched with no published findings, and its primary ask is a 1:1 interview about the hardest thing that has happened to someone.

The site serves three audiences: people who have lost a partner to suicide, and those close to them; donors deciding whether a grassroots project is serious; and research partners checking for rigor.

At pre-launch, all three need the same foundation before anything else, so separate paths made no sense. The segmentation had to happen through sequence.

The page opens on the gap rather than the grief. "Grief is part of it. Not all of it." names what the project exists to address before asking anything of anyone.

Next comes the problem, with the context that establishes its scale and urgency. Then the plan, with explicit dates and named deliverables. Then the ask. By the time a visitor reaches the interview request, they have seen what the project is for and how it intends to get there.

The founder story comes after the ask. Leading with it would have made the project read as one person's grief. Placed after, it reinforces a plan the reader has already seen and warms the donation section that follows.

The interview request carries the most weight on the page, and the most friction. Every element around it is designed to lower the cost of saying yes.

The request spells out what participation involves. It notes that earlier participants found the interviews healing. The form previews the questions, so nobody commits without knowing what they will be asked. The stipend is named, with the option to redirect it.

A high-friction ask is rarely improved by making the case harder. It is improved by removing the reasons someone has to hesitate.

The last reason to hesitate is the question every visitor brings to something new: is this real? SWP had no results to point to yet. Established businesses face the same problem with every new service or repositioning, which is a market nobody has proof in yet.

When there is no proof, specificity does the work. The statistics carry academic citations. The phases have years and deliverables rather than intentions. The donation tiers name exactly what each amount funds.

Precision reads as credibility because vagueness is what people expect from projects that have not been thought through.
